Have I Told You Lately? Van Morrison
Baby I Love Your Ways. Peter Frampton
At Last. Etta James version is the only one that will do.

The Group Trip

There are 8 of us, we make up 4 couples. For the past 13 years each couple has taken turns planning a "group trip" - it is usually a long weekend, somewhere close and never without the most wonderful memories. There are some things about this group and these trips that I hope I never lose sight of or take for granted....
1. These women friends of mine married really cool guys and it is beyond fun to hang out with a group where everyone truly enjoys each other.
2. I have never come home from one of these trips feeling anything other than grateful - for the friendships, the time to relax and the memories.
3. It is a HUGE group effort to pull this off - there are 10 kids, 8 parents and 8 grandparents who all have to clear their schedule to make this happen. I have realized in the last few years that this trip is looked forward to by the kids and grandparents as much as it is by the parents. The reward from all the prep work is worth it - for everyone!
4. When we come home, our kids want to hear about the stories, the other adults, the activities. This trip is precious to them, too. They need to know the importance of dear friends and I love that this is the example they are seeing.
5. This group feels like family to me and feeling like family is probably the best feeling in the world!

All 4 couples are celebrating big wedding anniversaries this summer and on the way home B. and I wondered what our group trip will be like when we have been married 50 years..... whatever it is, I'm looking forward to it!

My Fridays

The past eight months I have been taking Communion to a friend of mine who is really fighting hard to beat cancer. She is going through all the ups and downs of chemo - the nausea, the fatigue, weight loss - all of it. I get there every Friday at about 7:15 AM and her front door is always open, she is sitting on the couch or lying in her bed and every week she is so eager to receive. The time we are together is short, about 15 or 20 minutes, but it is the most powerful part of my week because not only is she fighting her cancer, she is also supporting her dear husband who is quickly losing his battle with cancer. About 2 months ago while I was there, Julia let me know that she was going to take a break from her chemo, she said she needed her strength back for a little while. At that time we knew that Jim's cancer had returned, and so quietly, without saying out loud what she knew in her heart, Julia began to prepare to help her husband at the end of his young life. Julia will go back to see her oncologist in a couple of weeks and her team will determine how much longer she can go without treatment so she can feel strong and well and can love her husband until death do they part.
These are the things that define my faith, they used to be the things that made me question my faith - "why them?" "where are you in all of this?" These moments speak to me, they change who I am inside and make me a better person, a better wife, mother, daughter and friend. Her strength, the love they have for each other as husband and wife, her sacrifice that she makes in order to truly be with him for every one of his final moments, these are the places I see God. Next week I will take this little gold locket to Julia's and she will receive nourishment and strength, and so will I.
If it's not too much to ask, would you say a little prayer for Jim and Julia, they need all the strength they can get right now. Thanks.

We are all back... safe, sound and a little awestruck! WOW, did that Walt Disney have an idea or what? We rode until we could ride no more, we trekked, we got super hot and super sweaty, we swam, we dined, we laughed and cried... I guess you could say we officially did Disney World! There is a chance a few cuss words were said during the week but I think it is safe to say that Zippety Do Da's outnumbered them by far! A few pics from the trip.....

And one photo from a really cool app for iPhone called ShakeIt photo. It makes the sound of an old polaroid and the pics have the same awesome polaroidness - my kids LOVE it!!

eggs

Remember the cardinal on the feeder from an earlier post? Well look what he and the Mrs. have left in our burning bush! She is not even sitting on them yet so maybe some more will be laid. I'll post some pics when they hatch - 14 days from start of incubation. Yep - that's the ladder to get the photo, the nest in in the very top of that bush.... clearly they know Mac!
In the meantime and in between time....
and...... Surfwise - on my summer list to watch.
