summer toys

The things I remember playing with when I was little are the ones that were "homemade". The green stove and fridge that my dad built, the giant yellow smiley face floatie that we pulled behind the boat, the dollhouse, the treehouse and old metal slide, the ice skating rink that was erected each winter from wood and lined with a really strong tarp.... and of course the go-karts! The go-karts were not safe, we did not wear helmets, we flipped them, we wrecked into things and other people, we were reckless drivers and the mufflers got so hot that it would burn your skin off if you barely touched it. I know all of that and yet I have allowed one of them to be deliverd from my parents house to our house. B. and the kids are in the middle of "getting it going again"... whatever that means. It's funny, I don't want them to get hurt, I don't want them to wreck and I sure don't want them to hurt anyone else but I do want them to have stories. I love the memory of the go karts, I laugh thinking about all the neighbor kids, the near misses and even the direct hits. I worry that we have become this society of protecting our kids from so much that we are missing the chance for them to have stories. So I am allowing the go-kart, and I am hoping for some near misses and no direct hits!

a july afternoon

We went to the pool early yesterday and everyone was home for the afternoon, it was very quiet here. Each of them spent time in their rooms - highlights: M took a nap, S created a big collage on his wall from a lot of his old Sports Illustrated magazines, B spent time getting acquainted with his iPad that he bought with some of his mowing money and birthday money. I caught up on laundry and didn't bother any of them!

I have been wanting to get out to Clinton Lake at sunset to get some pictures. Last night the schedule worked, the big kids were at a birthday party so the 3 of us took a trip to Sonic and then the lake. It was a beautiful evening and sunset, here are some pics in case you missed it..... there is a little spider on one of the plants, we watched him spin his web while we waited for the sun to sink.

Here is a link to those great soda pop cap necklaces.

A song on repeat these days....

The Doobies

For Father's Day we gave Brian 2 tickets to the Doobie Brothers/Chicago concert at Starlight - I told him he could "take a friend". I honestly thought he would take Craigger, James K., Dana G. - you know, someone who shares the Doobie Love with him. He chose me. We were in a heat advisory when we left town for Starlight, the outdoor theatre.... it was not a dry heat. They wouldn't let me take my camera in because it has a detachable lens - I am just sick about that because B. became someone I have not known in the 24 years we have been together. At one point he leaned over to me and said, "Tell me one place you would rather be right now" and with that he was up - dancing, singing, sweating to the oldies. I thought of about 15 other places I would rather be and then promptly got up and joined in. I had to, I was the chosen friend and didn't want to disappoint. He was calling his "other" friends and holding up the phone, singing every word to every song and he knew what song was coming after the first 3 notes. For a little bit I sat there and thought, this could be a scene out of Seinfeld for a bad first date. But don't anybody worry, 10PM rolled around and, as usual, Brian started looking at his watch. Phew - he was back, and it was almost like they knew - 10:15 and the Doobies said their goodbyes..... it was either Takin' It To The Streets or Listen To The Music, it's all a blur.

Nothing has been uploaded from KC yet, but here is a clip from another city on this tour.... enjoy!

And here they are in their hey day....

They have so many good friends, kids and adults, and I am so very thankful for that! Mostly I love how much they love each other - unbelievable, really.

This Colorado vacation was a good one, a really, really good one! We hiked, we rafted, we played games, we met some dear friends for a couple of the days, we laughed and we hung out together - no computers, no TV's, no carpools, and it was good. On our first hike M and B offered to carry the packs and Brian and I looked at each other and realized we had made it - after all those years of carrying the twins in backpacks on our shoulders and also carrying the packs full of lunches and other supplies on our fronts - this year was paydirt and we deserved it! I watched other families with young children going up and down and I remembered those days, we would each have a child in a carrier on our backs and when one twin would throw their sippy cup there was nothing we could do to help each other. I think we spent most of those early hikes doing squats up and down the mountain just picking up dropped items while the other parent would verbally guide... "It's a little to your left, now up about 3 inches, THERE!"

It is so fun to see how different our chidren are from each other. I asked Simon how he liked hiking, he was very kind and thoughtful when he told me that he really liked it, he just would like it to be a little more entertaining. The walking quietly and just looking around doesn't quite fit his idea of a "good time" - but having his brother and sister completely to himself sure made up for the lack of entertainment! Brandon is so content in the solitude and I think he could hike all day every day and never tire. Maddie loves the conversation while we hike, it is her time to get organized, make big plans and reveal any ideas she has in her head.

We are home for the summer now and that feels good, too!
