Floating along

The end of July, how does summer float by so quickly!  We have been going through bedrooms this week, the latest activity to beat the unbearable heat.  The kids make piles, one to go to the rummage house, one to toss and one of things they would like to be put in their memory boxes.  Earlier this week we went to my childhood home and looked through old memory boxes, my sister's and mine, my mom's and then boxes that went back for many generations.  There were old, old recipes and recipe boxes, maternity clothes from the 60's, childhood clothes that I remember wearing.  Really, nothing worth any money, but all so full of memories.  I have loved seeing what our kids have wanted to put in their boxes.  Since they were born, I have gone to the U-Haul store and bought moving boxes.  I/they usually fill one box about every 3 years, for each child.  It works great, they are easy to label and they stack in the storage room very easily.  When I went home this week, I chuckled when I saw the memory boxes in my mom's attic.... same idea, just a different era......

And one last bit from our vacation - speaking of floating away.  The kids painted wooden boats and we took them into the National Park to float them down some streams.  One of the many things I love about vacation, everyone really gets into childhood mode.  It is especially great for the youngest one, he spends a lot of time trying to keep up with the older ones, it is nice when they are on his level and loving every minute of it.  A few pics from the float.....

Waiting for it to float by

spotting it and..

following it.

Polar Bear Club - 2011 members

We are home.  We are refreshed. We are relaxed.  We went to Colorado for the week and had a wonderful time.  No computers, no TV and only very spotty phone service.  I have a couple of posts for you from our trip, I'm starting with a time honored tradition in this family.  The mountain streams are cold, ice cold.  I remember when I was young, my dad would see who could keep their feet in the longest... I think I made it to about 3 or 4.  Brian and I have been together for about 27 years, and I don't remember a trip to Colorado that hasn't included him sticking his head in a mountain stream at some point.  Once we had children and they reached the appropriate age (whatever that was), they all wanted to be a part of the polar bear club.  Can I show you the 2011 members?  FYI - I am not a member, never have been and never will be, I'm not a fan of the brain freeze - I get enough of those with my migraines.

Sweet 16. theirs and mine.

Every birthday eve they sleep in the same room.  They wake up on their birthday, breakfast in bed followed by howling laughter.  I don't even know what it would feel like to be a twin, but I do know what it was like the day they were born.  The day I became a mother and nothing has been the same since.  Moments ago a woman I adore rang the doorbell with a bouquet of flowers and a card.... for me!  A card and flowers to celebrate the day I became a mother and a note that brought tears from me and a little eye rolling and chuckling from the 16 year olds.... followed by hugging, but eye rolling and chuckling first, as it should be.

Annual group trip

Last summer I wrote about the annual trip we take with some good friends, you can read about it here.  This year was our turn to plan the get away, and due to some uncertain moving dates, we decided to stay close to home.  We started by touring the Boulevard Brewery and then followed that up with Fresher than Fresh popsicles.  Do you remember I wrote about this last summer and wanted to find her sno cone truck?  The afternoon was spent checking out the area, the happy hours and then dinner here.  The next morning we took in City Market for breakfast, coffee and farmer marketing.

Boulevard Doorway

beer barrels
tasting garden at the end
HammerPress building - Fresher than Fresh popsicles sold and eaten here.

City Market

The most beautiful $5 bouqets
Fresher than Fresh - yum!

I'm getting ready to get ready for vacation.  Do you do that?  We're headed to the mountains for a while.  I might try to do some catching up here before I go, if not, I'll return when we return.

"Independence" Day

Monday - Independence Day.  Good friends, grilling, fireworks, boys with punks, lake swimming, laughing and cheering.

Wednesday - Independence Day.  The first kid birthday party that I had no part of.  Our twins are turning 16 in one week and last night they went to their own party that they and a dear friend planned, I mean went to it and planned it by themselves!  I remember their first birthday party, a cookout at a community park to celebrate their first trip around the sun - our first trip as parents.  We were surrounded by our support group, the people who were there for us that first year.  And now last night, them, out with their support group.  Ones they have known since Kindergarten and younger.  When they left to go I had one little gulp and then gratitude,  we had some fun, fun, fun friend birthday parties and I enjoyed every single one of them and now it's time.  Time for me to hear about them instead of witness them, and gratitude that I'm OK with that.  And when they woke this AM, their car looked like this:
